From clinical experience tension in the poll is very common in the horse and chronic tightness in this region has a significant impact on overall posture and gait. The ‘poll’ refers to the atlanto-occipital (AO) joint (between the skull and the first vertebra/ C1), and the atlanto-axial (AA) joint (between C1 and C2). The AO joint is crucial for flexion and extension (‘yes’ joint) and the AA joint crucial for head rotation (‘no’ joint). The poll plays a significant role anatomically in head and neck movement and mobility therefore, in order for the horse to bend, flex and extend correctly they must first be free from tension in this region. Tension results in muscle shortening which in effect reduces the range of motion within the joint. Routine physiotherapy will vary case by case but we recommend getting your horse checked at a minimum of 6 monthly for maintenance. Horses undergoing physio therapy for rehabilitation will have a tailored plan and can expect regular visits. This applies to riders too!! A rider with muscle asymmetries and/or poor posture will result in an unbalanced seat which can put additional stress through the horses back and musculoskeletal system. Kyra’s 5 top tips for caring for your arthritic dogs during the colder months ❄️ 🐾 ❄️ keep them warm, if it’s cold for you it’s likely to be cold for them, colder temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict which reduces blood flow and circulation to joints. Consider getting a coat if needed. Provide soft and supportive beds in warmer parts of the house. ❄️ If your dog gets wet dry them thoroughly, staying wet for prolonged periods of time will expose them to getting cold increasing stiffness and pain sensitivity. ❄️ If it’s too cold, there’s a risk of slipping or they don’t want to go for a walk consider enrichment games. There are plenty of activities you can do at home that encourages joint range of motion and mental stimulation. ❄️ Monitor your dogs clinical signs and act on these as they present. Colder weather can reduce mobility and increase pain sensitivity which may deteriorate their usual clinical presentation. Having a consistent multimodal treatment plan in place will help to address any changes in symptoms before they persist. ❄️ Consider a trusted supplement if you do not already have this in place. There is research to suggest supplements have anti-catabolic and anti-inflammatory effects.
